by GermanPickle on Apr.24, 2009, under General Topics, Photos
Every now and again, the driving habits of others absolutely drives me nuts! I’m not a road rager, and I can count on my hand how often I’ve flipped the bird at another driver, in my entire life. That said some drivers are so completely clueless that I just want to get out of my car, tap their window and teach them the right way to do things. More often than not, drivers pull moronic moves in the parking lot. (continue reading…)

Economic Woes??
by GermanPickle on Mar.19, 2009, under Opinion, Photos
Hard economic times? Cars are lined up to the street at a Winnipeg Tim Horton’s drive thru… I brew my own coffee, but I guess this is evidence that either times aren’t as tough as the media portrays, or people are just plain unwilling to sacrifice the most simple convenience.

Where’s it Made, and Do I Really Care?
by GermanPickle on Feb.08, 2009, under Shop Smart
Where’s it made? I ponder. Where’s it made? and do I care? This discussion has been common in my family and has in some cases even ended up in an argument.
With the economic down turn, and now a recession with more job losses than the 1992 recession, this year will be a tough one. The US President stated last week “Buy American”, and this came with harsh international criticism. So do I care, and should you? (continue reading…)
Seal Hunt!
by GermanPickle on Feb.04, 2009, under General Topics
Okay. Gruesome I know, but let’s stop and think about this for just a second.
Why do we care about the seal hunt so much? Is it that wild animals are being hunted? Well we allow deer, and bear hunting.
Is it that many of the beaters are baby seals? We eat veal….
Is it that they are clubbed to death with a hakapik? I won’t even go into detail as to what we consider normal for slaughtering cattle, pigs, or even chickens. How about fishing; netting thousands of fish, dumping them into a boat where they suffocate and are piled on top of each other.
Some seal meat is turned into silage, which is fed to cattle for feed; so that we can eat our steaks. Vitamin E pills, and other health food pills which contain fish oils, often contain seal oil.
What’s my point? Well I guess. I see the seal hunt a little different. I don’t like how we slaughter any of our animals. But at the same time I’m trying to see a big picture, and well although it sounds gruesome, I wouldn’t be surprised if a seal suffers less than a cow going to the slaughter house, or a laying hen in a battery cage. But then again, we all want our steak and eggs don’t we? Maybe it’s not about the seal hunt. Maybe the problem isn’t the clothing industry either. Maybe, it’s all of us wanting what we want and not thinking past our wallets. Maybe we should step back and look at how each of our daily decisions affects everything around us. Maybe if we choose more wisely rather than being caught in the rat race, maybe some of this stuff wouldn’t happen…. at least not to this extent.

Today I Felt Old.
by GermanPickle on Jun.26, 2008, under Personal
Well today was a pivotal time in my life, I think. Today, for the first time, I felt old. I’m not certain what triggered this thought initially, but if I took a guess it was a sign on the Transcona Country Club that said “Congratulations 2008 Grads” (continue reading…)
Should I Hire This Contractor?
by GermanPickle on Apr.16, 2008, under General Topics, Shop Smart
So, I was looking to get some work done by a contractor. I made a few calls, got a few estimates, and all but decided on a business. the one I was planning on chosing was a member of the Better Business Bureau, and had no complaints. that’s when I noticed it.
The “Principal” listed for this business was a person I knew in High School. He’s a year younger than I and used to be a complete hothead. I had several confrontations with him.
After high school, rumors came out that he was arrested, and convicted of drug trafficking. I checked the courts website, and this is the case.
I ran into this guy in 2002 while standing in line at Silverado’s Night Club. He seemed calm and more mature. I think he was fresh out of the slammer back then. I checked him out on the justice website. Trafficking Cocaine… Geez….
So, would you hire this guy as your contractor? I’m thinking No.
